Book review: Rolex Highlights

Title: Rolex Highlights

Author: Herbert James

Publisher: Schiffer

Date of publication: 2015

Pages: 96

Glossy hardcover book, beautifully illustrated, with excellent pictures and a well written account of the ascent of the Rolex brand.

My rating: 8 out of 10

The book starts with a chronology of the Rolex story. How Hans Wilsdorf created the brand in 1908, and how his constant quest for innovation made them become pioneers of the watchmaking industry. The author highlights how technical achievements and marketing genius have made Rolex an iconic brand that attracts hundreds of thousands of customers every year.

We are then introduced to the historically significant Rolex models. The watches are beautifully photographed, and each one comes with a clear data sheet and an estimated market valuation.

The current collection is also very well presented, with excellent colour reproduction and individual technical specification.

The writing style is clear and easy to follow and doesn’t assume any technical knowledge on the part of the reader.

As the title suggests, this book is written for novice collectors and anyone who wants to know more about this legendary brand. It is not the ultimate book on Rolex, but an excellent ‘starting point’, and as such, is well worth buying.
